5 Trades That Should Happen In The 2020 NFL Draft

One of our favorite things to do with all of this newfound free time has been to read everyone’s mock draft. You can even read mine (http://www.backsportspage.com/nfl-mock-draft-v1-0/). But one thing that most people don’t do is account for trades. That’s because it’s difficult to project a trade. Sure, we hear rumors of teams wanting to move up to grab someone they’ve got their eye on, or a team wanting to move down to acquire more assets. Then, you can pair teams together and come up with a dream scenario for a trade. I’m going to break down 5 trades that should happen in the 1st round of the NFL Draft either prior to, or on April 23.

Cincinnati Bengals trade #1 to Miami Dolphins for #5, #18, 3rd Round Pick (#70), 2021 1st Round Pick
Why it makes sense for Cincinnati: Assuming they aren’t 110% in love with Joe Burrow and must have him no matter what, the Bengals can alter their franchise with multiple 1st rounders being acquired. There have been rumblings about how Burrow may not be thrilled to play in Ohio. The Bengals would still be able to draft a QB at 5 (Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert) and still have 4 other top 70 picks, plus an additional 1st next year.
Why it makes sense for Miami: Miami is loaded with draft picks this and next year. This move allows them to take Burrow, who multiple reports have said is the apple of their eye. They still keep one of their additional 1st rounders this year (#26) and they will still have one of their 1st rounders next year (acquired in the Laremy Tunsil trade).

Carolina Panthers trade #7 to Cleveland Browns for #10, 3rd Round Pick (#97), and 2021 4th Round Pick
Why it makes sense for Carolina: This is a team that is trying to acquire pieces for the future. Most people, myself included, believe Carolina will pass on a QB this year and figure to be in the running for the top guy, Trevor Lawrence, next year. Also, by dropping down 3 spots, they will still have a good chance at drafting either Isaiah Simmons or Derrick Brown to fortify their defense.
Why it makes sense for Cleveland: The Browns have a compensatory pick in the 3rd round which they can use as collateral. Looking ahead of them, the Cardinals at #8 and the Jaguars at #9 could be teams that would draft an offensive lineman, something the Browns desperately need. Now, they could stand pat and wind up with potentially the 4th best offensive lineman in the group (probably Andrew Thomas), or they can make a move at who they really want (whoever is available of Wirfs, Wills, or Becton).

San Francisco 49ers trade #13 to Jacksonville Jaguars for #20 and a 3rd Round Pick (#73)
Why it makes sense for San Francisco: The 49ers traded Deforest Buckner to Indianapolis to acquire this pick, and they can use it now to ease the void of not having a 2nd or 3rd round pick. They’ll still be able to draft an elite talent at Wide Receiver at 20 (Ruggs, Jefferson, Higgins, or Mims) and pick up what would be their only Day 2 pick.
Why it makes sense for Jacksonville: The Jaguars are sitting at 20 (the pick acquired from the Rams in the Jalen Ramsey trade) and are staring at multiple teams in front of them that could draft a Cornerback, a position of great need for them. They can leapfrog Denver, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, and Las Vegas and secure the most likely #2 defensive back in the draft, whoever their preference is. They have 3 4th round picks that if they want to get back into the 3rd, they have some ammunition.

New Orleans Saints trade #24 to Baltimore Ravens for #28 and a 3rd Round Pick (#106)
Why it makes sense for New Orleans: The Saints are tied with the Chiefs for the fewest amount of draft picks with only 5. This allows them to pick up a valuable Day 3 pick while only moving down a couple spots.
Why it makes sense for Baltimore: The Ravens have multiple picks in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds, so they have the ammo to move up even more should they desire to. This way they can all but secure one of the linebackers that would fit into their system, whether it be Patrick Queen or Kenneth Murray.

Kansas City Chiefs trade #32 to Indianapolis Colts for 2nd round pick (#34), 5th Round Pick (#160), and 2021 3rd Round Pick
Why it makes sense for Kansas City: The Chiefs, like the Saints, only have 5 picks in this year’s Draft. They’re able to pick up an additional pick this year and a Day 2 pick next year, just to drop down 2 spots.
Why it makes sense for Indianapolis: There seems to always be a team that trades back into the 1st round because they want to lock up the 5th year option that a 1st round contract gets. Multiple times, we’ve seen teams do it for a Quarterback that may need some seasoning. The Colts signed Phillip Rivers to a 1 year contract, so the guy the Colts could be eyeing would have a veteran to learn from. I can see this be for someone like Jordan Love, should he fall, Jalen Hurts, or Jacob Eason.
