Big Blue Report: Webb, Giants Rebounds Against Lions, Prep For Jets!

Davis Webb seemed cool and calm during his post game media sessions following his tough outing against the Browns where he ended up 9-22 for only 70 yards.  After his first game action from last season, Coach Shurmer felt his second year QB was a little too fired up “Davis gets a little amped up at times and that’s what causes the ball to sail a little bit, but he had his moments. He had some good plays in there.”

A little bit of a different feel the second time for Webb against the Lions as the Giants defeated Detroit 30-17. Webb rebounded from his tough performance by throwing connecting on 14 of 20 passes for a 140 yards and one touchdown pass. Pat Shurmer praised the effort and the ability to bounce back of his young QB “He did a good job the other night. He played better than he did against Cleveland, and with the reps he gets this week coming up, I’m expecting him to play even better. Within a good performance, the numbers were good and he got a touchdown, but there were still some things in there that we need to clean up to have a winning performance in a real game.”

Eli Manning, Odell Beckham Jr, and Sequon Barkley all sat this one out. Manning and Beckham were coaches decisions and Barkley was nursing a tweaked hamstring. To add more worry to the possible injury woes, Jalen Simmons who has opened a lot of eyes during camp went down with a concussion. ” Jalen had a concussion and he’s actually doing well today. At least the reports are that he’s doing well. He’s moving around, he was actually moving around last night, so we’re just going to take it day by day with him and see how he progresses.”

The Game was a culmination of a weeks worth of work down in Detroit after practicing with the Lions for a full week.Players and coaches found the benefit of the process and the experience including Odell Beckham Jr. “It was cool to be able to go against somebody else. We’ve been going against our guys every day, and they know everything that you’re doing. It’s hard to beat somebody who sees you every single day. So, to be able to go against other guys, compete, practice hard and practice safe, it was a lot of fun to be back out there. You know, I’ve been going against (Lions CB Darius) Slay since Mississippi State. Every time I see him, it’s always good energy.”

Eli Manning shared the same feelings as it is better to practice against a different group at practice. “I think they have gone well, it’s just good work. To practice against a different style, different theme to their defense, get into different situations, third down, the red zone where teams play different coverages than our defense plays, so we got some work. The ball is going to different guys and everybody is getting through their progressions, and so I think it has been great work, good to mix things up and go against different guys.”

Next up: New York

The team prepares for the annual “Snoopy Bowl” at Met Life Stadium this Friday night as they play their cross stadium rival the New York Jets. The Jets are considered the home team in this encounter and will be QB’ed by a familiar face as Teddy Bridgewater. “Teddy is an outstanding, competitive guy and he’s got a unique charisma. When I was there with him, the whole area loved Teddy. He just had that way about him, and then when he got injured everyone was pulling for him to come back. I’m thrilled for whatever success he’s having. I did peak at their game and it appears to me like he’s playing pretty well. The only thing I would say is don’t sleep on Teddy because I think he’s got it in him.”

Coach Shurmer gave high praise of rookie QB Sam Darnold. “He had some of the same traits that Teddy has. Very charismatic, he has that winning presence about him and you can see being with him on campus at USC that the players really kind of came to him. He had that, and he was obviously highly successful as a quarterback.” This will be the first time Darnold will play his in stadium rival.

The Giants won last season’s preseason meeting 32-31 after blowing a huge 29-3 lead and had to hold on as Bryce Petty helped Gang Green get back in the game. The Jets finished 5-11 last season and made a huge trade to obtain the 3rd pick in third pick in the draft which ended up being Darnold.
