Cowboys Sweep Giants As Eli Returns!

Eli Manning was back in the lineup and Steve Spagnuolo made interim coaching debut for the New York Giants but it did not make much of a difference as the Giants gave up 20 points in the fourth quarter to fall to the rival Dallas Cowboys 30-10.  Giants are now 2-11 and officially hold the 2nd pick in the draft due to a 49ers victory earlier in the day.

The score was tied at three until the 2:07 mark of the second quarter when Eli Manning found Rhett Ellison for a one yard touchdown pass which made it a 10-3 game. Eli Manning broke down Ellison’s efforts today. “I thought Rhett did a good job and I thought he made some nice catches, did some good things, got the touchdown. Every time we’ve gotten him the ball, he’s done a good job turning it up and getting yardage and making plays. The way they were playing, he had an opportunity to get the ball and made the most of it.”

The next Dallas Series saw Dak Prescot find Dez Bryant for a 50 yard touchdown pass that tied the game at ten until the 4th quarter.

Dak Prescot broke down the play for the media after the game. ” Yeah, the touchdown to Dez, they blitzed, we saw it, threw to his side or just off of it and Dez did the rest and pretty much the same way with Beasley. They blitzed, we saw it, Rod did a great job coming across and picking it up and Beasley broke off his route quick and went and made a play.”

Interim Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo stated he was happy through the first three quarters. ” I’m really proud of the men in that locker room. I told them that. After all we went through this week, I thought the way we came out and the way we played for three and a half quarters was something we could be proud of. We do have to figure out a way in the fourth quarter when it gets down to gut wrenching time to make a play or two. Now, I’m going to put a little bit of that on me. I didn’t like a couple calls I had in the fourth quarter that resulted in bad plays for us defensively. I don’t want that to be on the players. I just talked about, going forward, if they could continue to do what we did this week in the middle of some adversity – I thought the adversity revealed a lot of good things in our football team. I do believe that unity strengthens and I saw unity and that’s a sign of a stronger football team in my mind. I would hope that they would continue to do that going forward and then just focus on the next game. So, that was the message.”

With 7:48 left in the 4th quarter the flood gates opened up for the Dallas Cowboys as the Giant Killer himself Jason Witten continued his on going success against New York as Dak Prescot hooked up with his tight end to cap of an 80 yard touchdown drive set up by Cole Beasley 54 yard run.

Witten broke down the play for the media. “That was a big possession for us. It was 10-10, a tight game. It was a formation play we liked. It was big for Cole to get that possession going for us. It was tight coverage. They do a good job disguising their blitz and their coverages. Spagnuolo has been good at that for a long time. We were able to catch a break. Sometimes when they bring that pressure. If you can get through that first line, like you saw it with Dez’s touchdown, and we were finally able to take advantage of it.”

From there the Giants gave Dallas the ball back and the Cowboys within four plays  put the game away with a Rod Smith 81 yard touchdown pass from Dak Prescot. Smith took advantage of the spot. “That one, I really wasn’t expecting it but, I felt like I was open and he threw it too me. I just went to the house, just went to the house. I had a touchdown with [WR] Dez [Bryant] out there blocking, escorting me. So, I appreciate them for that.”

Knowing they were down to score, the Giants tried to pace themselves down the field until Eli Manning turned the ball over with an interception which led to the third touchdown for Dallas as Smith scored his second touchdown of the day.

Prescot finished 20-20 for 332 and three touchdown passes. After the game Dak discussed on how he was able to stay focused and finish drives. “To me, just my focus and just staying locked in on each and every play and just the details of the play, the things you all don’t see, honestly was what I’ll take away from this game that I think I did best. Moving, getting guys in the right spot, getting them the right checks and things like that.”

As for Eli Manning, he finished 31-46 for 228 with one touchdown and one interception. The crowd at Metlife stadium gave Eli a standing ovation when he entered the field. After the game Eli expressed his gratitude. ” I thought we had a good crowd today and I appreciate all the support these past weeks and sorry we couldn’t get them a better game today.” He continued “My focus is trying to get the play and figure out what the Cowboys are doing. I appreciate it. I appreciate all of the support the fans have given me for 14 years and these last weeks, especially. I appreciate them coming out today and cheering me on and cheering on the Giants.”

Coach Spagnuolo was asked if Eli will start next week and he would not commit. ” I’m not going to comment. I don’t know. I’m not going to comment on that right now. That would be my gut feeling. Look, without looking at it and evaluating, but Eli Manning is the quarterback right now.”
