East Rutherford- The Giants introduced Dave Gettleman as their new General Manager on Friday and here are some of the notes from the press conference.
John Mara:
-They will start the search for a new Coach right away.
-They can not ask permission to talk to candidates who are still under contract until Monday
-They Discussed that Eli Manning has a lot of good football left in him but they will discuss Eli’s future wit the new coach.
-They originally were going to wait until January but they decided to make the hire now as Monday coaches will become more available and wanted to be ready to compete for those top candidates.
-They admit Eli Apple has had a tough year but they will wait to hire a coach to help make the decision. They understand he has a tough year but they don’t want to give up on a young talent like Apple.
-They Want Odell Beckham Jr as a Giant but they have to sit with David and the new coach and work that. They might let him play out his 5th year option on his contract.
-There was not an exact plan with Davis Webb. When McAdoo was let go he and Spahnuolo both agreed Eli gave the team the best chance to win.
-Mara admitted that they didn’t handle the Eli benching well during the season.
-Spagnuolo will have an opportunity for an interview.
Dave Gettelman
-He is pretty sure Eli Manning will return as the Giants QB
-He will evaluate Odell Beckham Jr. and his contract situation
-He doesn’t want guys who want to win, he wants guys who hate to loose
-Has a good working relationship with Steve Spanguolo and he will get an opportunity to interview for the Head Coaching spot.
-Has not seen anything like the Eli apple situation but will let the situation play itself out. Does not want to give up on a talent like that.
-Feels it was important to have the support of Giants alumni.
-He want Giants fans to know that we’re going to use every avenue to get this thing fixed
-Concerning the #2 pick: “You can never have too many great players at one position.”
