The Eagles’ Plan For Jalen Hurts

The Philadelphia Eagles shocked just about everyone when they selected quarterback Jalen Hurts with the 53rd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Eagles fans immediately took to social media to display their disdain for the selection.

The pick received enough instant public backlash to warrant an unscheduled press conference from the Eagles front office.

As expected, General Manager Howie Roseman spoke first as it pertains to the decision to take a quarterback in the second round.

In his opening monologue Roseman said “When coach Pederson came in, we sat down in 2016 and we said we were always gonna be about the quarterback position… it’s the most important position in sports and we were very fortunate enough to get a very talented, young pro bowl quarterback in Carson Wentz… we want to surround him with as many good people as we can and as many good players as we can.”

While looking at where they were on the draft board, Roseman asserted “Jalen (Hurts) stood out” in terms of what they believe in as an organization.

Roseman went on to say something that really stood out to those who were listening.

“For better or worse we are quarterback developers, we want to be a quarterback factory.”

In reality, becoming a “quarterback factory” should come second to building the best roster possible. Using the 53rd pick on a backup quarterback is not the path to constructing the best team when there are several other holes on the roster.
