Clash of Legends

Dustin Poirier’s retirement fight was a night to remember for fight fans around the world.  A multiple time title challenger who has consistently put on incredible fights, Poirier made his final walk against another legend in Max Holloway.  Although much of the pre-fight narratives celebrated Poirier’s historic career, the fight also had major implications for the current lightweight landscape.

Despite his loss to Ilia Topuria, Holloway had recently knocked out Justin Gaethje in his viral UFC 300 performance.  Dustin Poirier had just come off a thrilling title effort against Islam Makhachev, so a win here bore major title implications for Holloway.  On the other hand, Poirier had a chance to close out his career after finally capturing the elusive BMF belt.  Furthermore, the two fighters had famously shared the octagon twice already, with Poirier winning both times.  Many fans will remember their clash for the interim lightweight title, where Poirier shocked many by out-boxing the streaking Holloway.  The stage was set for a momentous occasion, regardless of who ultimately won.  

The Fight

The fight itself proved to be back and forth, with both fighters demonstrating their evolution and toughness.  Max Holloway’s permanent transition to the lightweight division paid dividends for him in this fight.  Unlike their prior meeting, Max quickly stunned and dropped Dustin in the early exchanges.  Holloway took control early, but Poirier battled back in vintage fashion.  After escaping a perilous position himself, Poirier rocked Holloway and ended the round landing heavy damage. 

Holloway went on to largely control the remainder of the fight, but Poirier continued to land big shots and have his moments.  The last ten seconds of the fight likewise delivered.  Holloway, in typical fashion, called Poirier to the center for a final exchange.  Poirier landed some heavy shots, but Holloway’s combinations proved too fast, forcing Dustin to clinch.  The moment further enlarged Holloway’s legacy while also allowing Dustin to close his career in style.

Legacies

Overall, both fighters showed up for this event.  Although years of brutal wars since their last meeting have taken a toll on both physically, they both showed impressive technical  improvements.  As always, no matter how grueling the pace or damage, both men dug deep and battled to the end.  Despite the loss, Dustin showed that he was still one of the best in the world, and should always be remembered as such.  Meanwhile, Max finally scored a win over a long-time rival, and now moves right back into the title hunt.  The sport will continue to move on, but it remains to be seen whether the new fighters can match the standard that Poirier has set.
