Following the NBA’s decision to postpone all playoff games and possibly the season after the unjust police shooting that hospitalized 29-year-old Jacob Blake, six MLB teams followed in the NBA’s footsteps by postponing their Wednesday games.
The games postponed include the Milwaukee Brewers vs Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Francisco Giants, and the San Diego Padres vs Seattle Mariners. The Los Angeles Angels vs Houston Astros game was also canceled due to Hurricane Laura being expected to hit Houston.
These moves announced by the sports leagues could be historic as they have garnered full support from their teams and many of the players. Major League Baseball issued the following statement:
“Given the pain in the communities of WIsconsin and beyond following the shooting of Jacob Blake, we respect the decisions of a number of players not to play tonight. Major League Baseball remains united for change in our society and we will be allies in the fight to end racism and injustice.”
Hopefully baseball joining with the NBA, MLS and WNBA to delay playing will bring the country’s full focus to issues of systematic racism and influence more aggressive actions. Like how the NBA season being shut down in March brought about national attention to the seriousness of COVID19, sports shutting down now hopes to have another ripple effect by influencing immense social change on the issue of race.
