The Anchor and the Ascent: How Devin Singletary and Two Young Backs Will Shape the Giants’ 2025 Backfield

The New York Giants officially closed the book on the Saquon Barkley era after the 2023 season. Since then, they’ve focused on creating a backfield by committee—one that emphasizes balance, versatility, and toughness rather than star power.

Now, heading into the 2025 season, Devin Singletary serves as the group’s veteran anchor. Alongside him, second-year back Tyrone Tracy Jr. and rookie Cameron Skattebo are emerging as key pieces in what could become one of the NFL’s most intriguing three-man backfields.

Singletary: The Stabilizing Force

Signed ahead of the 2024 season, Singletary brought dependability and veteran savvy to a young offense. In his first season with Big Blue, he quickly earned the trust of the coaching staff, showcasing his classic traits: smart cuts, ball security, pass-blocking awareness, and a calm, steady presence in high-pressure moments.

His familiarity with Brian Daboll’s system, dating back to their time together in Buffalo, has helped him settle in as a leader. And as the Giants’ quarterback situation continues to evolve—between Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston, and Tommy DeVito—Singletary remains a reliable constant in the huddle.

“Devin’s not a flashy back, but he’s exactly what this offense needs,” Daboll said during spring workouts. “He makes the smart play and helps keep us on schedule.”

Tracy Jr.: The Second-Year Sleeper

Tyrone Tracy Jr., drafted in 2024, made steady strides in his rookie season. A converted wide receiver from Purdue, Tracy displayed his explosiveness and receiving chops in limited snaps—flashing in both screen packages and motion sets.

Now entering year two, Tracy is expected to take on a much larger role. Coaches have raved about his development as a runner and his improved pass protection. He’s likely to be featured as a third-down weapon, used in mismatch situations and up-tempo drives.

His skill set gives offensive coordinator Mike Kafka the flexibility to move him around pre-snap, forcing defenses to account for his presence both in the backfield and as a slot option.

Skattebo: The Rookie Enforcer

The Giants added more juice to the running back room by drafting Cameron Skattebo in 2025. The former Arizona State standout plays with a bruising, no-nonsense style, thriving in short-yardage and contact-heavy situations.

At 5’10”, 215 pounds, Skattebo is a classic downhill runner—but he also brings soft hands and a blue-collar mentality that fits what the Giants are building.

Coaches believe he can carve out a role as a goal-line and fourth-quarter back, the type who can wear down defenses and help control the clock.

“Skattebo doesn’t hesitate—he hits the hole hard and finishes runs. That’s the kind of back you want in tight games,” one coach noted during minicamp.

The 2025 Rotation: Balanced, Built for Situations

  • Devin Singletary: Primary back, early-down workhorse, pass protector, and locker room leader.
  • Tyrone Tracy Jr.: Versatile weapon on third downs and in spread formations.
  • Cameron Skattebo: Short-yardage and red zone specialist with upside as a late-game closer.

This trio gives the Giants something they haven’t had in years—depth, flexibility, and a situational plan for every down and distance.

Building for the Present, Preparing for the Future

While Singletary remains the face of the group in 2025, Tracy and Skattebo are clearly the future. And what’s most valuable is that the veterans are helping build that future the right way.

“We don’t need one guy to carry the whole load,” Singletary said this spring. “It’s about roles, rhythm, and doing your job when your number’s called.”

With an uncertain quarterback picture and a retooled offensive line, the Giants will need their backfield to be steady and productive. Between Singletary’s leadership, Tracy’s second-year leap, and Skattebo’s rookie grit, this running back room might quietly become the most reliable unit on the team.
