Night One of WrestleMania 41 is over. Some people were in shock and awe, and some were disappointed. Overall, it was a night to remember for many wrestling fans across the globe.
Mind you, there’s another night of action happening. That includes the vaunted WWE Championship match between John Cena and Cody Rhodes. Will the Rock come out and sabotage everything for the American Nightmare? Or will Rhodes stand tall and prevent Cena from getting his 17th World Championship?
That’s speculation for Sunday night. In the meantime, it’s time to look back at the first night and the various highlights and lowlights. Boy, were there plenty of both.
The Highlight of the Night
Plenty of wrestling fans have given Jey Uso flack for various reasons. That includes only having five moves and his character growing stale. However, his win over Gunther was big for various reasons.
For one, it establishes him as worthy of winning a major championship in professional wrestling. He’s massively over and is extremely entertaining. Just look at his post-match interview after winning the World Heavyweight Championship.
There’s also Jacob Fatu, who impressed countless wrestling fans with his athleticism. Swanton bombs and moonsaults galore, the Samoan Werewolf was flying across the ring at 100 MPH. He has the potential to hit the same mark as Uso with a major championship run, given his athletic abilities.
Finally, Tiffany Stratton was a star during her match with Charlotte Flair. Fans aren’t too hot on Flair for… specific reasons. However, seeing Stratton defeat Ric Flair’s daughter was huge. It gives Tiffy Time much-needed momentum as the Women’s Champion. The entrance was also awesome in that it would’ve made Margot Robbie blush.
The one thing I wasn’t a fan of regarding WrestleMania 41
Let’s be honest. Seeing Paul Heyman give low blows to both CM Punk and Roman Reigns could’ve been seen from a mile away. The main event match needed a big swerve or turn. After all, you can’t just have a triple threat without something major happening. Paul Heyman on a Pole match, anyone?
The predictability soiled the main event, leaving the latter part of WrestleMania 41 to peter out. Now, where does WWE go from here? Will Seth Rollins challenge for a major championship with the Wise Man in his corner? All that matters is that the obvious ending didn’t do much to satisfy.
There’s also the ending between Rey Fenix and El Grande Americano. That could’ve also ended much better. Fans could’ve been treated to Chad Gable being unmasked instead of the “suspense” living on for another few months. Just get it over with, WWE!
Show Review
I will give this show a C+ for numerous reasons. One, it didn’t have the best endings for numerous matches. Finishing strong is vital if you want to have a memorable WrestleMania match. Given the Cody Rhodes-John Cena storytelling debacle, fans have already soured on the show. They turned on the main baby face and want something different.
Now, the pressure’s on WWE to deliver something big for Night Two. They must find a way to weave long-term storytelling with nailing the ending to WrestleMania in Las Vegas. Can Triple H and company do that on Sunday? Stay tuned.
In the meantime, this wasn’t the best night for WWE. The good news is that it wasn’t the worst, either. It’s something that can be built off of with an action-packed night, where Fatu-like performances can lead the way.
