In the second matchup of a two-game series in three days, the Oklahoma City Blue (8-4) defeated the Stockton Kings (6-6), 121-93, on Friday evening at Paycom Center. Thunder assignment player Aleksej Pokuševski posted 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, as seven players scored in double-figures to help the Blue clinch a spot in the Showcase Cup.
“There is a standard and an identity we want to play to offensively and defensively.” Head Coach Grant Gibbs said. “We wanted a chance to play for the Showcase Cup and had some work to do the last few games and we took care of business. I think it’s good to be in that group and see what we can do there.”
Oklahoma City scored a season-high 34 points in the first quarter on 54.2 percent shooting, including an efficient 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, to grab an early 18-point lead after one. The Blue held the Kings to just 30.6 percent shooting in the quarter.
Rob Edwards connected on three triples in the first four minutes of the second quarter to extend the lead. Edwards scored 14 points in the second frame, the most in a quarter by a Blue player this season. The Blue scored a season-high 70 first-half points with four players reaching double figures, finding themselves ahead 70-39 at the half.
Thunder assignment player Tre Mann posted 10 points, six assists, and five boards and Ty Jerome added six points, seven assists, and four rebounds. Two-way player Aaron Wiggins scored 15 points on just six shots to go along with five rebounds.
Stockton was led by Marcus Graves’ 15 points and seven assists while Matt Coleman II added 14 points off the bench.
The Blue earned a spot in the Showcase Cup with the victory as the top eight teams in the league qualified. The Showcase Cup takes place December 19-22 in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
