Welcome to the Suns Files! With the season now fully in swing, we’ll be here talking Suns basketball every week!
Big Time Comeback
The Suns started their 2025-2026 campaign at home against the Sacramento Kings. Things did not start well for the retooled Suns, as they fell behind by as much as twenty at one point. The team entered halftime down 17 and needed a spark. Devin Booker and Grayson Allen each scored 10 points in the third quarter, helping Phoenix outscore Sacramento 36-21 in the period. The Suns entered the fourth down two and would take the lead just a few minutes in. Sacramento fought back, but Phoenix was able to hold for an opening-night victory. Booker finished with 31 points alongside 22 from Ryan Dunn
The feeling was good for Phoenix, who saw great play out of center Mark Williams and Ryan Dunn, who combined for 20 rebounds. Of course, there was some concern; the team won, but they didn’t play a complete game. Comebacks like this are memorable and always fun, but it may have been an outlier for what this season is going to be for Phoenix. Their next two games were far more telling.
Phoenix Can’t Play a Complete Game
If Phoenix being down 20 on Wednesday was an appetizer for what’s to come, the last two games have been the entree. Phoenix’s second game of the year was in Los Angeles against the Clippers, and they came out of the gate looking strong. They struggled defensively but were able to keep pace for one quarter. The Clippers would outscore them 23-38 in the second quarter, and there was no imminent comeback for Phoenix this time.
The incredible rebounding that helped lead to that Wednesday comeback was a no-show in game two. After an impressive opener, Mark Williams struggled mightily against the Clips and, unfortunately, was further ruled out for Saturday’s game against the Nuggets for right knee management.
Against the Nuggets on Saturday, Phoenix fell behind early and kept fighting throughout the first quarter, but they gave up six points in the final eleven seconds of the quarter to enter the second down six. It seemed like it wasn’t the Suns’ night after Jamal Murray’s half-court shot was made to end the quarter, and it certainly wasn’t. Phoenix was outscored again in the second and would never fully recover.
Biggest Takeaway
One thing to note from both losses is that, in total, Phoenix played four solid quarters. They can play solid basketball, but they can’t seem to do it for four quarters. Even their opening night victory needed a comeback because they didn’t play well early on. This team will learn how to play a full game with time, but for now, it’s clear how most games will go against top opponents in the West. If Phoenix can get back to rebounding like they did against Sacramento, they’ll have a better chance to play spoiler at the end.
