Giants Open Camp With A Lot Of Questions

The 2024 New York Giants Training Camp has officially kicked off, and the first two days have already provided plenty of excitement, insights, and optimism. General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll have been at the forefront, addressing the media and providing updates on key players and their plans for the season ahead. Here’s a comprehensive look at the major highlights, including Daniel Jones’ recovery and the impact of HBO’s “Hard Knocks.”

Daniel Jones’ Recovery and Progress

The spotlight is firmly on quarterback Daniel Jones as he returns from a significant injury. Jones, who is eight months removed from an ACL surgery, has been fully cleared for contact and is participating in all the drills.

“Daniel is ready to go,” stated Coach Daboll. “He’s getting all the reps today. He’ll get them with the ones every day. If we need to pull him back for whatever reason, maintenance, then we’ll talk about that after every practice. But right now, he will be in there every snap that the ones are in.”

Schoen emphasized the cautious optimism surrounding Jones’ return, noting the importance of monitoring his recovery process. “We have to see how the body reacts. We don’t know. In spring, he did not do team drills. He’s eight months off of it. So we’re going to work with him and he’s got to communicate with us on how his body feels, how the knee feels. That will determine how much he does moving forward. But the plan is to be a full go.”

Offensive Line Adjustments

Another focal point has been the offensive line, particularly the status of offensive tackle Evan Neal. Neal is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which has led to some strategic shuffling within the line.

“He’s not far. He’s been working hard all summer,” Schoen said about Neal’s progress. “He’ll be off to the side. The training staff is going to ease him back in there. How he plays and his contribution to the team will take care of itself from there.”

In the interim, Jermaine Eluemunor has been moved to right tackle. Coach Daboll confirmed this move and indicated it’s a temporary adjustment until Neal is back to full health. “We are going to put (Offensive Tackle) Jermaine Eluemunor out at right tackle…If he plays well and keeps playing well, we’ll see. We will revisit it when Evan (Neal) gets healthy.”

Hard Knocks: Behind the Scenes

HBO’s “Hard Knocks” has been documenting the Giants’ training camp, offering fans an intimate look at the team’s dynamics and the decision-making processes. One notable moment captured was the conversation between Schoen and Daniel Jones, where Schoen reaffirmed his confidence in Jones despite the challenges.

“I think they did a good job last night. That’s legit, the conversation I had with Daniel,” Schoen commented. “We went through that process not knowing Daniel was going to be here today and full go 100%. You are trying to make decisions and you don’t have all the answers. We didn’t know that he was going to be healthy today, and we don’t know what it’s going to look like tomorrow. He’s eight months off an ACL. So you go through the process, and we had a thorough process, which I think they did a good job of showing.”

Exciting Developments and Player Performances

The first two days also highlighted some promising performances from other players. Wide receiver Malik Nabers has been one to watch, with Daboll expressing his excitement about Nabers’ versatility and potential impact.

“We’re going to use him in a variety of spots. Keep learning and growing in the offense. Do what he needs to do each day in practice. Do the things he needs to do outside of the building. Compete his tail off, which I know he will. Looking forward to watching him.”

Building Team Chemistry

A significant part of the camp has been about building team chemistry and ensuring everyone is on the same page. This includes both the offense and defense, with an emphasis on communication and competition.

Daboll noted, “With the secondary, there’s competition. It’s training camp. So you’re not getting ready to play next Sunday. You let the process play out. You compete it out and then you make a decision on who you’re going to play.”

The opening days of the Giants’ training camp have set a positive tone for the season. With Daniel Jones making a strong comeback, strategic adjustments on the offensive line, and the behind-the-scenes insights from “Hard Knocks,” there’s plenty for Giants fans to be excited about. The journey ahead is long, but with the leadership of Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll, the Giants are poised to tackle the challenges head-on and make significant strides in the 2024 season.
