The seven-game winning streak of the Mets has come to an end at the hands of Texas Rangers in the series finale.
As the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Unfortunately for the New York Mets, their winning streak has ended. They have ended their seven-game winning streak against the Texas Rangers in the series finale. Despite their winning streak ending the Grimace Era, they still won the series. The team has also won eight of their last ten games.
Offensive Explosion
Following a sweep of the San Diego Padres, Monday night’s victory over the Rangers was indeed a fun one to watch. The team capped off a 14-run display against a struggling Texas team that’s still finding its way to get back to winning. It was also a new season high of 22 hits for New York, something that we haven’t seen in a while. The Mets go the scoring party going in the first inning. SS Francisco Lindor led off the game with a line drive single. Moments later, he would score on the RBI single by 1B Pete Alonso, who would give the team an early lead.
The team kept the rally going the next inning. Red-hot 3B Mark Vientos lined a single to left, and 2B Jeff McNeil followed through with a single to left. Francisco Lindor again came up with clutch with an RBI single making it 3-0 New York. Both CF Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso would join the hit parade on RBI singles extending the lead. OF DJ Stewart would later end the run of singles by blasting a towering three-run homer to make it 7-0. The Rangers would eventually get on the board in the bottom of the inning. DH Robbie Grossman would hit a two-run homer to make it 7-2.
The Mets were not done scoring. Francisco Lindor would lead off the inning with single, his third hit of the night. Lindor would then score on a two-run homer by Brandon Nimmo, making it 9-2. That home run would end Rangers SP Jon Gray’s night after just 55 pitches.
New York would add two more runs in the fifth when C Francisco Alvarez join the party with a single up the middle. After McNeil walked, Lindor lined an RBI double off the chalk down the right field line before he came around to score to Nimmo’s RBI single making it 11-2.
The Mets added on in the sixth on an RBI single by Alvarez. They scored their final runs in the eighth on another RBI single by Alvarez and then an RBI groundout from McNeil. Amidst all the scoring, SP David Peterson pitched six strong innings, allowing two runs while striking out six.
Down But Not Out
Things were never easy for the Mets early on in the second game. SP Luis Severino made his 14th start of the year and got rocked hard by this struggling Rangers’ offense. Severino allowed six runs on eight hits and one walk in six-and-one-third innings. He only struck out one. But that didn’t stop the Mets from answering right back.
The team rallied while down 6-2 after five innings completed. It all started in the eighth inning. With the Mets trailing 6-4, Francisco Alvarez would deliver a game tying two-run double, driving in both Pete Alonso and RF Starling Marte to even up the game. New York would not take the lead until the ninth inning. With two runners in scoring position, Alonso would deliver the go-ahead run for New York on an RBI single.
Edwin Díaz would eventually close the door for New York in the bottom of the inning, leading the team to their seventh straight win. It was also his seventh save of the year. RP Reed Garrett got the win in relief, also his seventh of the season.
Solid Outing Not Enough
In the series finale, the Mets sent LHP Sean Manaea to make his 14th start of the year. He took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning. Texas tied the game right away and left the Mets no choice but to take him out of the game. Manaea was charged with three runs in the inning and got the no decision. The Rangers would eventually take the late lead the following inning. It all came from one swing of the bat from pinch-hitter OF Leody Taveras, who launched a two-run homer. That proved to be the difference of the game.
