Things have just gotten even sweeter for the New York Knicks, who have already put the entire league on notice. After trading for Mikal Bridges and resigning OG Anunoby, they have now gone all-in, locking up their star player, Jalen Brunson. While this deal comes as no shock, Brunson has deserved every penny for this type of contract extension. After all, he did carry the team while half of the players were injured. This is a big win for the Knicks.

The Contract Structure

By the way, it looks like the contract is not expected to be a max contract but more of a team-friendly one. If he had waited until next summer, he would’ve had the chance to sign a five-year, $269 million extension. Instead, he chose to go with four years worth $157 million. This deal will cost Brunson $37.1 million over the next three years but will include a fourth-year player option.

What This Moves Means For The Knicks

After re-signing Brunson, this move helps the team financially. The team now has saved approximately $113 million. This move allows them to help build up a championship contender around the likes of Josh Hart, Donte DiVincenzo, and Mikal Bridges. Part of it was thanks to Brunson, who unselfishly decided to make a smart move for the team. They have remained in contact with core veterans, such as Precious Achiuwa, who they might be interested in bringing back.

Statistical Highlights

Last season, Brunson averaged 28.7 points on 47.9 percent shooting, along with 6.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 35.4 minutes per night. As a result of his hard work, he won himself a spot in the All-Star for the first time in his career. He finished fifth in the MVP race, fifth for Most Improved Player, and fifth for Clutch Player of The Year. There’s still more to it. Jalen also helped the team reach the second round of the playoffs in each of the two past seasons for the first time since 1999.

Unfortunately, for him and New York, they would get eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 back in Madison Square Garden. During that game, he would also injure his hand, leaving no choice but to leave the game. Indeed, it was a tough blow for the team. New York is motivated to have a better deep run this upcoming season after last year’s embarrassment.
