The Dolphins Make Moves; Free Agency, Resigns, and Draft Picks

The Miami Dolphins made some big moves in the offseason. So who’d they get and who’s moved on?

Let’s Talk Free Agency

The Miami Dolphins most talked about player to be placed on the 2024/2025 roster so far is WR Odell Beckham. He played 1 year for the Baltimore Ravens after a one year pause in 2022 to fully recover from an ACL injury.  Nonetheless, he has star player charisma and star playing potential so there’s weight behind all the excitement.

LB Jordan Brooks took a 3 year contract after playing 4 years for the Seattle Seahawks. So far he played his best season of football in 2023 and his potential is enormous. As far as players Miami got in free agency, Odell Beckham might have the brightest spotlight, but seeing how Brooks evolves in a new team environment is going to be worth paying attention. (We hope – no one’s forgotten Russel Wilson…)

LB Shaquil Barret, former Buccaneer, filling the vacancy left by Andrew van Ginkel. This position needs a lot of love as it’s still unknown when Bradley Chubb and Jaelen Philips will return to play.

TE Jonnnu Smith signed a  2 year contract. Notably, Smith is coming off a career best performance, during his 2023 season with the Ravens. The aspiration for Smith is that he has skills on par with peers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

CB Kendall Fuller, last playing for the Commanders, signed for 2 years. Fuller has a solid record that includes winning Super Bowl LIV with the Saints, (as did teammate Tyreek Hill).

Jordan Poyer left the Bills and filled a vacancy left by Brandon Jones. OC Aaron Brewer, formerly playing for the Titans, signed a 3 year contract. Miami Native LB Anthony Walker Jr., last playing for the Browns,  signed a 1 year contract with the Dolphins.

DT Bonito Jones, formerly playing for the Lions, actually played a few games with the Dolphins in 2020. (Maybe this time he’ll get in a whole season?)

Drafted

During the 2024/2025 draft the Dolphins held the 21st, 55th, 120th, 158th, 184th, 198th, 241st pick. They had to forfeit their 3rd round picks after the NFL decided they had “impermissible contact” with Tom Brady and Sean Peyton’s agent. However, they knew well in advance the situation they were in and planned accordingly.

Mohamed Kamara and Jaylen Write add the the speed the Dolphins love. They seem to collect the ultra fast. Patrick Paul is considered to have shown tremendous skill and the expectation is high for this rookie. Jury’s still out on some of the other draft picks – we’ll see how it goes.

Who left and where did they go?

The Dolphins released many of Miami’s favorite starters. Players like LB Jerome Baker, DT Christian Wilkins, DT Raekwan Davis, CB Xavien Howard, DE Emmanuel Ogbah… all felt like they were as part of Miami as South Beach. Yet, teams change, and players move on. Still, these are big talents, so we can expect some dynamic shifts on the field in the  2024/2025 season

  • Christian Wilkins – Las Vegas Raiders
  • Jerome Baker – Seattle Seahawks
  • Raekwan Davin – Indianapolis Colts
  • Andrew Van Ginkel – Minnesota Vikings
  • Emmanuel Ogbah – unsigned
  • Xavien Howard – unsigned

The Cost of Excellence

Talent isn’t cheap, while releasing Ogbah alone opened up 13.7 million to make their moves, they ended up spending 93 million on 13 free agents this year. More than last year, but not overwhelmingly so.

It’s Miami, a city that spends and love shiny new things. We are all looking forward to the 2024/2025 season, and as always, we want it to be the best one yet.
