With Spring Training on the horizon, these three MLB teams have proved to be the biggest winners of the offseason thus far.
The calendar has flipped to 2025 and we’re inching closer to Spring Training for MLB teams. Pitchers and catchers will report in a few weeks. Spring Training will begin by the end of February, with Opening Day slated for March 27. There are still a number of top names in the free agency market that have yet to sign. These notable names included 1B Pete Alonso, 3B Alex Bregman, SP Roki Sasaki, OF Anthony Santander, and CP Tanner Scott. These players hope to get deals done on time and get themselves ready for the preseason.
On the other hand, some teams have reached the point where they’re wrapping up their successful offseason. Many popular names such as OF Juan Soto landed impressive contracts. Now let’s take a look at three MLB teams that have proven to become the biggest winners of the offseason thus far.
New York Yankees
After losing out on Juan Soto in a bidding war to the New York Mets, the Yankees have wasted no time in addressing areas that needed improvement. New York was looking more and more motivated to strengthen this roster and secure a championship contending team for the upcoming season. They aggressively used much of their available money. The first move they made was securing a top-tier starter pitcher. They went all out and landed SP Max Fried on an eight-year, $218 million contract. With the addition of Fried, the Yankees’ rotation becomes stronger with SP Gerrit Cole, SP Luis Gil, and SP Carlos Rodon.
New York was not ready to surrender just yet. Additionally, they made trades that turned out to be blockbuster deals. They kicked off their moves by trading for All-Star CP Devin Williams, acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers. It was surprising that New York wouldn’t have to give up a huge haul for a talented player like Williams. The only players New York gave up were SP Nestor Cortes and prospect INF Caleb Durbin along with cash considerations. It seems like the Yankees may have found their next closer as the replacement for CP Clay Holmes.
The second blockbuster move the Yankees pulled off was trading for OF Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs. To be clear, this one was an obvious one. A lot of experts around the league had expected this deal to go off, and it happened. Similar to the Williams deal, New York did not give up a ton for the former MVP. Going back to Chicago was RHP Cody Poteet along with cash considerations. Last but not least, the Yankees have signed veteran 1B Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year deal. It’s fair to say that this offseason could be the Yankees’ best since 2009.
New York Mets
So far, it has been a great time to be a Mets‘ fan during this offseason. Similar to their crosstown rivals, they have wasted no time getting down to business. Their biggest move, which solidified them as the winners of the offseason, was landing star OF Juan Soto on a mega deal. They signed the 26-year-old superstar to a record-breaking $765 million. This was a deal many experts around the league expected to happen. Furthermore, credit goes to owner Steve Cohen who pulled this out. With this kind of move, expect the Mets to be in the playoffs for years to come.
However, New York made other impactful moves that improve to the team. One of them is re-signing SP Sean Manaea, who experienced a career year in 2024. This was a move that had to happen considering the number of pitchers the team lost in free agency, which includes SP Luis Severino and SP Jose Quintana. The Mets have also signed RHP Clay Holmes as a starter, which is weird. The last time Holmes was a starting pitcher dates back to his Pittsburgh days and it did not end well for him. In addition, the Mets are bringing SP Frankie Montas to Queens in the hopes he can bounce back from a mediocre season.
There is still one question yet to be answered. Can the Mets bring back their starting first baseman in Pete Alonso? Many Mets fans consider Alonso to be a fan favorite. If New York chose not to bring him back, it would be a disappointment to a fanbase that have enjoyed watching him these past six seasons.
Los Angeles Dodgers
If there’s a third MLB team that should be declared a winner of the offseason so far, it’s the Los Angeles Dodgers. The defending champs have done a nice job in making moves in hopes of repeating in 2025. They were able to retain OF Teoscar Hernandez on a three-year, $66 million that kept a dangerous hitter in the middle of the lineup. Additionally, they signed former Cy Young winner SP Blake Snell as a potential replacement for SP Jack Flaherty. Last but not least, they recently signed KBO star INF Hyeseong Kim as a versatile infield option.
The Dodgers also extended UTL Tommy Edman for five years and $74 million. He could play every day while occupying a spot somewhere up the middle. Los Angeles may not have spent over $1 billion like they often do, but they still have had one hell of an MLB offseason.
