Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka was released from New York-Presbyterian Hospital on July 4th after taking a line drive off the head in a simulated game. The line drive was hit by Giancarlo Stanton, who is annually atop the Exit Velocity leaderboards across Major League Baseball.
In a Zoom interview on Independence’s Day, Manager Aaron Boone commented on the injury scare: “He (Tanaka) had concussion-like symptoms originally before leaving for the hospital, which has since dissipated. He will go into the concussion protocol, but feel like we are getting good news on that front.”
In addition to Tanaka’s injury scare, Boone announced that INF DJ LeMahieu and RHP Luis Cessa have tested positive for COVID-19 before intake testing prior to Spring Training 2.0.
“DJ LeMahieu and Luis Cessa are both self-isolating right now at their homes outside the state of New York,” said Boone. “In DJ’s case, he’s been asymptomatic the whole time. In Luis’s case, he’s had very mild symptoms. We are hopeful that it will be a short time, but they are not here at this point. We will see how that continues to unfold the next several days.”
Opening Day for the Yankees begins on July 23rd against the Washington Nationals, so hopefully, all three players are fully healthy by the start of the season.
