Cardinals Corner – Arizona Releases Depth Chart Ahead Of First Preseason Game

The Arizona Cardinals’ first preseason game against the Chiefs is this coming Saturday, and the first depth chart of the season has been officially posted. This is sure to change, but many things are as expected as well.

Cardinals Depth Chart Is As Expected

Firstly, the Cardinals’ depth chart doesn’t include any surprises; the starters are what was expected. The defensive line will be anchored by Darius Robinson, Dalvin Tomlinson, Calais Campbell, and Josh Sweat. The four of them should be the best grouping on defense. Their play will dictate many games for the Cardinals this season.

Furthermore, the Cardinals’ offense looks like many thought it would. The receiving core will be held down by Marvin Harrison Jr., Zay Jones, and Michael Wilson. Also, Greg Dortch is listed right behind Michael Wilson. He’s been a mainstay of this receiving core for a few years now, albeit in a limited capacity. It’ll be interesting to see what he can do this preseason.

The Twelfth Man

Interestingly enough, the Cardinals’ first listed depth chart has 12 players listed on defense. Evidently, that’s quite an oddity considering only 11 can be on the field at one time. That said, Arizona will not have all twelve out there. I expect packages to be rotating constantly on defense, and this first depth chart helps show that. It’s also possible that Cardinals coaches haven’t come close to ironing out exactly how the secondary is gonna look, hence why training camp and preseason exist.

Right now, the secondary has Max Melton, Will Johnson, and Garrett Wilson in the corner spots with Budda Baker and Jalen  Thompson in the safety spots. Eventually, one of those corner spots will likely be dissolved from the depth chart come the first game of the season, so keep an eye out for the cornerback group. Out of every Cardinals position group, they are the one that could change the most this preseason.
