Big Blue Report: Fall Out From Dallas!!

Let me know if you have seen this script before, the Giants are now 0-2. We have seen this 0-2 go to 0-6 in 2013, and 0-5 in 2017.  We have seen the 0-2 turn in to 9-7 and 10-6 with runs to the Superbowl.

So which is this script is? After watching up close against the Cowboys and Jaguars, Big Blue needs to go back to the drawing and figure out how to fix the offensive line.

Against the Cowboys defense, the offense seemed to look like a deer in headlights as Dallas sacked Eli six times for a loss of 59 yards and many check points. The result an 0-2 start and many questions.

Offensive Coordinator Mike Shula stated that how complicated it is to make changes to the line would be. That’s part of it. I think all of us realize that. Ideally you keep everybody healthy and nobody gets hurt, but you have to plan for changes, for sudden changes. The difficult thing is you can’t get everybody equal reps so guys are going to have to step up, but guys are professional. It’s part of their job to be able to produce without a lot of reps. Injuries happen, unfortunately, but you deal with them and move on and next guy up.”

On the other end of the spectrum, the defense was solid but still gave up 20 points. Defensive Coordinator James Betthcher was not happy time the Red Zone defense. “Anytime, whether it was the zone read plays, or whether it was when the quarterback was underneath center and they ran the inside zone that went for 20, I’m disappointed on both of those plays, equally. We can’t allow big runs. We had two opportunities, you go back to Jacksonville, we give up a big run backed up, that’s points on the scoreboard in tight games. We know that defensively, and that’s why that is a very big point of emphasis. It’s a point of emphasis every week. I think stopping the run, that’s what we talked about, and that’s what we have to build ourselves on. All three times in a row, we’ve faced really good run teams, and we haven’t played as well as we need to play. We’re just going to keep grinding, keep working, and follow the process, because the process works.”

Odell Beckham is fresh off of signing his new long term deal and is not hiding fact the team is not even close to its potential. Odell felt that the team was not as sharp as they could be against Dallas. ” It wasn’t as close as the first week. They just came out and outplayed us. Some days, a team comes out and they just play a really good game and Dallas did that. Not to say we weren’t prepared, they just played a better game. Same thing as last week – 0-2 now, we’ve got to win. But it’s not like the whole season is over if you don’t. It’s just, you want to win games. We game plan it, we got some good stuff in and we’ve got to come up with a victory.”

Saquon Barkley feels that the team should easily be 2-0 instead of an 0-2. Barkley who ended up being the center piece of the offense this past Sunday against Dallas had 11 carries for 28 yards and 14 receptions for 80 yards. Barkley felt that the team is treating this as they are building.

Barkley stated the following about the 0-2 start.  “I don’t think we feel like we’re a much better team than that, I think we know we’re a much better team than that. I think we know that we’re so close. In this locker room, no one is overreacting. I mean obviously I’m active on social media so I think a lot of people outside of this locker room and outside this building who are reacting. We are aware 0-2 is not a great start, but it’s not the worst thing possible. It’s not like our season is over, like you said, it’s not college, it’s not college football. It’s not like the year’s over. We got to continue to work and continue to grind and believe in each other and this could turn out to be a great year.”

Eli Manning is trying to not put the focus on the 0-2 start and panic too much. Manning has been here before and knows how to calm the guys down in the locker room. “Just stay away from that. Keep the pulse of the team where it needs to be. Listen to your coaches and your players and just worry about us and that’s the only thing that’s going to affect us is the guys in this locker room, in this building that have a positive outlook on what’s going to happen.”
