Here is all the latest updates from Giants camp:
Roster Moves:
The New York Giants have agreed to a trade that will send Pro Bowl outside linebacker Olivier Vernon to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for right guard Kevin Zeitler, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday.
In addition, the Giants will send a fourth-round pick (132nd overall) in the upcoming NFL draft to the Browns for a fifth-round selection (155th overall), a source told ESPN.
Vernon is scheduled to make $15.5 million in each of the next two seasons. With the addition of Zeitler, the trade will save the Giants $1.5 million against the cap.
Recent signings:
-The Giants re-signed center Jon Halapio, who had been an exclusive-rights free agent.
Both general manager Dave Gettleman and coach Pat Shurmur praised Halapio at their season-ending news conferences. Asked about the offensive line, Gettleman said, “he was playing the best of anybody” before the injury forced him from the field. And Shurmur said Halapio “played really well at center until he got hurt.”
– The Giants announced they have re-signed Pro Bowl kicker Aldrick Rosas, an exclusive rights free agent.
Rosas had a breakout season in 2018, his second with the Giants and in the NFL. He hit 32 of 33 field goal attempts (and 31 of 32 extra point tries), a franchise-record .970 percentage that was just 1/100th of a percentage point behind NFL leader Robbie Gould, a former Giant. Gould made 33 of 34 attempts (.971). Josh Brown held the previous Giants record since 2015, when he had a percentage of .938.
-The Giants announced they have re-signed tight end Scott Simonson.
Simonson teamed with Evan Engram and Rhett Ellison to give the Giants a solid trio of tight ends in his first season with the team in 2018. He was the only one of the three to play in all 16 games, starting four. Simonson had career-high totals of nine receptions for 96 yards, including his first career touchdown on a three-yard reception at Indianapolis on Dec. 23.
Simonson joined the Giants as a free agent on June 12, 2018. He spent the entire 2017 season on the Carolina Panthers’ injured reserve list with a back injury
-The Giants re-signed veteran Alex Tanney. He spent last season primarily as the backup to Eli Manning but did not throw a pass. The Giants now have three quarterbacks under contact with Manning, Tanney and Kyle Lauletta.
-WR Corey Coleman will return for another season with the Giants after they decided to tender the restricted free agent and former Browns first-round pick. Coleman will be given the original round RFA tender and get a one-year deal at $2.025 million after he earned the trust of the Giants’ coaching staff in the second half of last season.
-No More Collins
The New York Giants declined on Tuesday to use the franchise tag on Landon Collins, making the star safety an unrestricted free agent next week. Collins took to Twitter to react to the news.
I want to thank the Giants organization for believing in me and allowing me to have 4 great years in NY. I can’t express how great it was to play with my teammates and in one of the greatest cities in the world. I will forever cherish my time in the blue and white and the
