John Cena turning heel was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread. It was supposed to give him a new alliance and a fresh take on his character.
“FINALLY! The Rock has UNLEASHED Heel Cee-na!”
The problem? The Rock doesn’t show up after the Elimination Chamber heel turn. Not only that, but he stated the heel turn was to stir up the pay-per-view. Ah, there’s nothing like stirring up the pro wrestling community with a haphazard heel turn to get them mad.
What’s more, Heel Cena won one of the worst WrestleMania main events in the spectacle’s history. It was slow, boring, and even had Travis Scott for no reason. I guess they needed the celebrity star power for the event.
Now? Fans aren’t chanting “John Cena Sucks” like they used to. Now, they’re thanking him. What in the world is going on?
More importantly, how do you save Heel Cena? What does TKO and Triple H need to do to ensure their big move is salvaged? Adding in the 17-time champion’s limited time in the WWE complicates things. Well, not as complicated as one would think.
Turning John Cena babyface is the best option here
If Cena wasn’t attached to the whole “I’m on a limited schedule” ordeal, this would be an option. Triple H could have him join a faction or have the Rock come out as the true puppet master, even a couple of months after WrestleMania. Heck, make Logan Paul a part of that faction. Make it entertaining.
However, the best option for WWE is to revert him back to his original babyface form. Let’s be honest: John Cena has always been a controversial figure in the wrestling business. It doesn’t matter if it’s his “Five Moves of Doom” or his appeal to little kids watching in their Superman pajamas. Cena has always been a polarizing figure to many passionate wrestling fans who are adults.
But now that the kids are grown (for the most part), why not give them “Good Guy” Cena again? Sure, Heel Cena has done a great job of “ruining wrestling as we know it” with his current run. However, there has to come a point where he eventually turns back to being good again.
What would being a heel at the end of his run do for his legacy? Would it provide the closure he wants to his illustrious career? Or would it tarnish it?
Maybe Cena should play the crowd and say, “Just kidding!”
Wouldn’t this be the ultimate heel move? It would solidify Cena’s mission to ruin professional wrestling if he stuck around and fooled the fans. That’s not all, though. He would get more heat if he threw his “retirement tour” plans out the window.
Of course, that sounds fun until you realize that Cena’s become an actor now. With films like Matchbox on his plate, it makes life tougher for the 17-time World Champion to commit to a full-time WWE schedule.
Therefore, it’s best if the face turn happened during the tour. It’s the most realistic option (although the prolonged “tour” would be funny) and it would salvage his run as a WWE legend. After all, these low blows are becoming a low blow for the fans.
