Kimbo Slice: The King of the Web Brawlers

Many of the most memorable figures in MMA were never known as “the best” in the world. Some made their mark in the professional fighting business in other ways, before fighting professionally for the first time. One way to do that is by becoming a sensation on the web.

The King Of The Web Brawlers

One of those is the late Kimbo Slice, nicknamed “The King of the Web Brawlers,” who became an internet sensation before social media grew to what it is today. During the early 2000s, when the sport of mixed martial arts struggled for acceptance, Kimbo Slice was making a name for himself in the unsanctioned world of fighting.

During the early 2000s, Kimbo Slice engaged in mutually contested street fights,  publishing them online. His gritty street-fighting style eventually helped him garner a reputation among MMA fans. Because of this, it was only a matter of time before Kimbo Slice would transition into the sanctioned world of professional fighting.

Becoming A Professional

In the late 2000s, Kimbo Slice entered the mainstream world of MMA when he signed with EliteXC. He quickly became a television draw for the company. despite his lack of experience, this is why Kimbo Slice got promoted as EliteXC’s top attraction, It’s worth mentioning he held an initial record for being involved in the most-watched MMA fight in American television history when he fought James Thompson for EliteXC in 2008.

After EliteXC closed, Kimbo Slice’s big break came in 2009, being a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter for the UFC. After that, he had a brief stint with the UFC following The Ultimate Fighter. UFC president Dana White, who initially was one of Kimbo Slice’s most vocal detractors, developed a fondness for him during that run.

While fighting for almost every prominent MMA promotion at the time, including UFC and Bellator, Kimbo Slice established an undefeated 8-0 record in boxing. Seven of those wins were knockouts. Additionally, Slice is  a name in the acting scene. He starred in several films during his career.

A Beloved Figure

Kimbo Slice’s passing in 2016 saddened the entire world of combat sports, dying at only 42 years of age. However, his fans will never forget his contributions. The reaction to his passing highlighted the fact that he is one of the most beloved personalities in combat sports.
