Liberty University kicked off their season with a 24-41 victory against the Campbell Camels on Saturday. While many expected a quick first-half blowout based on last year’s performance, the Camels, led by new head coach Braxton Harris and a revamped squad, had other plans. With the Flames fielding several new faces, fans were uncertain what to expect from either team.
Liberty Offense
The Flames initially showed some nerves, resulting in a fumble and a missed field goal. However, their running game remained solid throughout the game. Quinton Cooley led the charge with 16 carries, 110 yards, and a touchdown. Billy Lucas also contributed with 78 yards and a touchdown. Despite the absence of Louisville transfer John Paul Flores due to injury, the offensive line held up well, and the receiving corps, featuring Treon Sibley, Darius Copeland, and Elijah Canion, performed admirably.
Liberty Defense
On defense, the Flames showcased their added speed with notable performances from Teylor Jackson, A’Khori Jones, and Dexter Ricks. They executed a crucial red-zone stop and made several key tackles behind the line. After halftime, both teams appeared more composed.
Campbell Offense
Although the Camels are not yet at Liberty’s level, they provided a tougher challenge than anticipated. Chad Mascoe II went 10-for-17 with 180 yards and a touchdown, showing potential despite struggles with passing on the run. Wide receiver Sincere Brown was a standout with 126 yards and a touchdown. The running game, led by Mark Biggins with 81 yards and a touchdown, was average.
Campbell Defense
The Camels’ defense initially made some crucial stops that kept the game close, but after halftime, the Flames began to pull away. Tensions on the field led to costly penalties for both teams, though the Flames’ comfortable lead mitigated the impact on their performance.
Looking ahead, if Liberty can play with more composure and discipline, they have a strong chance of becoming playoff contenders this year. Meanwhile, Campbell, under new leadership, may show significant improvement in the coming seasons.
