Overview

After watching Cam Ward’s tape, it’s clear why nearly every media outlet has him as this year’s first overall pick. An experienced athlete against various levels of competition, Ward has proven that he’s a winner no matter where he’s playing.

The first thing that sticks out with Ward is his natural athleticism. From how he drops back to how he throws the football to how he evades pressure, the man is eye-popping. Because of this, you can tell that Ward plays with a sense of calm that most only gain with time. Whether he’s clean in the pocket or escaping pressure, Ward is cool and collected. Going back to his athleticism, it’s impressive what his arm can do. The angles he can throw from, the way he can reach all levels of the field, and the zip he puts on the football is unique. Furthermore, the Miami alumnus shows good anticipation for finding open windows. And even more, he has some experience taking snaps under center.

But despite his arm talent, Ward shouldn’t rely on it alone. The former Hurricane will occasionally rush his mechanics causing him to be arm-heavy in his throws and be inaccurate. He’ll also unknowingly drift aimlessly in the pocket, sometimes bringing him away from pressure but sometimes bringing him closer to it. Lastly, he needs to learn that it’s okay to live to see future downs and that it’s alright to take easy yards, whether it be on short throws or with his legs.

My Two Cents

I remember watching Cam Ward in his first year at Wazzu and thinking he was the best-kept secret in college football. Well, the cat’s now out of the bag, as he’s projected to be the first overall pick come April. Would I take him if I were Tennessee? I don’t know. I do know, though, that I don’t trust another quarterback in this draft outside of Ward to flip their franchise around.
