Rundown: Special Edition – Rating the NBA’s Dynamic Duos

We grew up watching dynamic duos.

They were mostly in the realm of comic books and their campy TV spin-offs in the 60s and 70s.

Batman and Robin. Dick Dastardly and Muttley. Jay and Silent Bob.

As I grew to love basketball, it was the Twin Towers – Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson, Terry Porter and Clyde Drexler, John Stockton and Karl Malone.

The everyone wanted to ‘Be Like Mike’ and ESPN’s Top Ten followed and hero ball took effect for awhile. It was the beginning of the end of team basketball, like Detroit’s ‘Bad Boys.’

That wasn’t enough – it had to be The Big Three. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Horace Grant (later re-cast as Dennis Rodman) in Chicago. Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen in Boston. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh in Miami.

Yeah, you had the Los Angeles Lakers who boasted Magic Johnson, Byron Scott, James Worthy, A.C. Green, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, one through five.

The Golden State Warriors tried to replicate that by going all ‘Justice League,’ incorporating Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green and Andrew Bogut (and later, the center of the day) into a concept

Now, we’re back to dynamic duos.

James Harden and Russell Westbrook. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. LeBron James and Anthony Davis. And, yes, even Jay and Silent Bob have a reboot.

So who’s the best?

That’s yet to be determined, but for the first half of the season, here’s how it’s shaken out thus far …

********************

#30 … Detroit Pistons – Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin

The Detroit Pistons have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NBA this season, and it’s because there’s no designated leadership. They are a team that simply has one of the better centers in the league languishing on a roster that doesn’t seem to give a damn on a consistent basis. It’s time to shake things up a bit, as New York eyeballs Andre Drummond.

Derrick Rose17.5 PPG2.2 RPG5.8 APG48.4%
Blake Griffin15.5 PPG4.7 RPG3.3 APG35.2%
TOTAL33.0 PPG6.9 RPG9.1 APG41.8%

#29 … Cleveland Cavaliers – Collin Sexton and Kevin Love

This is a short marriage as Kevin Love is expected to be traded sometime within the next three weeks. Darius Garland and Kevin Porter, Jr. should be the dynamic duo here and will be in 2020-21. But if I had ranked them with their rookie number this season, they’d be last instead of Detroit, and that’s not fair to anyone on the Cavaliers’ roster.

Collin Sexton18.5 PPG3.1 RPG2.3 APG45.1%
Kevin Love16.8 PPG10.2 RPG2.9 APG46.1%
TOTAL35.3 PPG13.3 RPG5.2 APG45.6%

#28 … Memphis Grizzlies – Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson, Jr.

The Grizzlies have come on of late and these two are a huge reason why. Add in the fact that Dillon Brooks is maturing into a consistent, reliable third guy on this roster at 15.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists this season (he was shaky at best last season), and the Grizzlies have good things brewing on the horizon during this rebuild.

Ja Morant17.8 PPG3.2 RPG6.6 APG48.5%
Jaren Jackson, Jr.17.8 PPG5.0 RPG1.5 APG47.9%
TOTAL35.6 PPG8.2 RPG8.1 APG48.3%

#27 … Miami Heat – Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo

This team is deeper than people realize. Not only do they have the veteran leadership of Jimmy Butler – and he seems to have found a place where he can co-exist with teammates and coaches – but Bam Adebayo has easily filled the shoes of the inconsistency Hassan Whiteside brought to the team after signing the big money contract. Adebayo is easily an upgrade and this team could have a two-tier dynamic duo system as Kendrick Nunn and Tyler Herro have ably come aboard and proven to be the future here in South Beach.

Jimmy Butler20.4 PPG6.9 RPG 6.6 APG42.9%
Bam Adebayo15.6 PPG10.6 RPG4.5 APG58.0%
TOTAL36.0 PPG17.5 RPG11.1 APG50.5%

#26 … Indiana Pacers – T.J. Warren and Domantas Sabonis

Jimmy Butler says that T.J. Warren is way too soft to be an NBA player, but Warren has proven otherwise, including being ranked ahead of Butler, along with Domantas Sabonis. Both have given the Indiana Pacers the building block confidence and energy they needed to stay in the hunt in the Eastern Conference until Victor Oladipo comes back. Malcolm Brogdon coming over from the Milwaukee Bucks has been a nice addition, as well.

T.J. Warren18.3 PPG3.8 RPG1.4 APG50.7%
Domantas Sabonis17.8 PPG13.0 RPG4.2 APG52.2%
TOTAL36.1 PPG16.8 RPG5.6 APG51.5%

#25 … Brooklyn Nets – Spencer Dinwiddie and Taurean Prince

When you have Kyrie Irving on your roster, you have to have a solid backup plan and Spencer Dinwiddie is that backup plan. He was when the Nets were led by D’Angelo Russell last year, too. Add in Taurean Prince from the Atlanta Hawks, and the Nets are staying afloat in a sea of sewage that is the bottom third of the Eastern Conference.

Spencer Dinwiddie22.4 PPG3.1 RPG6.2 APG42.0%
Taurean Prince12.2 PPG6.8 RPG2.1 APG37.0%
TOTAL36.6 PPG9.9 RPG8.3 APG39.5%

#24 … Denver Nuggets – Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic

Denver is relying on virtually the same roster and schemes that got them in the playoffs last year. Michael Porter, Jr. has been brought along very slowly and may prove to be a sleeper in the Nuggets’ plans for the second half of the season. But at 5-4 since Christmas Day, teams are beginning to figure the Nuggets’ one-two punch out and capitalize. Cleveland did it last night.

Jamal Murray17.8 PPG4.2 RPG4.8 APG44.0%
Nikola Jokic18.9 PPG9.8 RPG6.4 APG50.5%
TOTAL36.7 PPG14.0 RPG11.2 APG47.3%

#23 … Orlando Magic – Evan Fournier and Nikola Vucevic

Orlando is another city that needs some shaking up of the roster. It might be time to consider trading your biggest asset, in Nikola Vucevic. But my fix would be to ship Aaron Gordon to Cleveland for Tristan Thompson. The front court needs help and it would free Vucevic up to score more from the perimeter. Gordon needs a fresh start. Eighteen points a game per person isn’t going to do anything magical for the Magic. Time to act.

Evan Fournier18.8 PPG2.6 RPG3.2 APG47.1%
Nikola Vucevic18.2 PPG11.3 RPG3.5 APG44.8%
TOTAL37.0 PPG13.9 RPG6.7 APG46.0%

#22 … Charlotte Hornets – Devonte’ Graham and Terry Rozier

The Charlotte Hornets replaced Kemba Walker with Terry Rozier, and trust me, they got the short end of the stick. The dirty end, if you will. Rozier has spent the first half of the 2019-20 season trying to fit in, but Devonte’ Graham has been the surprise leader. Hopefully these two can create a buzz for the Hornets in the second half of the season and have them in the seventh or eighth spot when all is said and done in April.

Devonte’ Graham19.1 PPG3.8 RPG7.8 APG38.1%
Terry Rozier18.0 PPG4.4 RPG4.4 APG42.4%
TOTAL37.1 PPG8.2 RPG12.2 APG40.3%

#21 … New York Knicks – Julius Randle and Marcus Morris

I don’t expect this duo to be together much longer, certainly not past February 6th, as New York needs to thin out its glut of forward and get someone into the Garden who can bring these cats some experience. The notion of Ricky Rubio for Marcus Morris isn’t a bad idea, and Phoenix would get a very serviceable front court mate for Deandre Ayton and Frank Ntilikina is looking better this year, so a serviceable back up at the point for the Suns. Rubio would also be a solid get to feed Andre Drummond if the Knicks can get their meat hooks on him, and we’d finally have a solid dynamic duo in New York for the first time in 20 years.

Julius Randle18.5 PPG9.1 RPG3.2 APG44.0%
Marcus Morris19.1 PPG5.5 RPG4.5 APG44.0%
TOTAL37.6 PPG14.6 RPG7.7 APG44.0%

#20 … Philadelphia 76ers – Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid

The 76ers just pooched an opportunity to even the season series with the Dallas Mavericks, but they are currently without Joel Embiid. You can see below what the big man brings to the table, but with a fractured finger, the Sixers are going to rely on #VFL Tobias Harris, Ben Simmons and their free agency imports to get through until All Star Weekend has past.

Ben Simmons14.9 PPG7.5 RPG8.6 APG56.3%
Joel Embiid23.4 PPG12.3 RPG3.3 APG47.2%
TOTAL38.3 PPG19.8 RPG11.9 APG51.8%

#19 … Oklahoma City Thunder – Chris Paul and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

These two, in addition to Dennis Schroder, are the reason that Oklahoma City not only has a pulse this season, but is in the hunt for a playoff spot, defying all odds and expectations. They have played so well that general manager Sam Presti has forgotten his early season expectation to have traded Steven Adams. Hell, I’d forgotten Adams was still on the Thunder, the way the guards have played.

19.8 PPG5.3 RPG2.8 APG46.2%
TOTAL38.4 PPG10.4 RPG9.3 APG46.6%

#18 … Sacramento Kings – De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield

These two are the reason that Luke Walton still has a job, despite the fact that the Sacramento Kings are basically in the same position and predicament as last season with players’ coach Dave Joerger. Walton has also succeeded because he saw what Joerger did in Nemanja Bjelica and Bogdan Bogdanovic.

De’Aaron Fox18.3 PPG3.9 RPG6.8 APG46.0%
Buddy Hield20.4 PPG5.1 RPG3.1 APG41.4%
TOTAL38.7 PPG9.0 RPG9.9 APG43.7%

#17 … Chicago Bulls – Zach LaVine and Lauri Markkanen

I actually feel sorry for both of these guys, but moreso for Zach LaVine as he not only has to endure the worst front office in the league in Gar Forman and John Paxson, but Lauri Markkanen has been phoning it in for the better part of this season, which is why the Bulls sit at 14 wins out of 40 thus far this season.

Zach LaVine23.6 PPG4.5 RPG4.0 APG42.7%
Lauri Markkanen15.4 PPG6.7 RPG1.6 APG42.3%
TOTAL39.0 PPG11.2 RPG5.6 APG42.5%

#16 … Golden State Warriors – D’Angelo Russell and Alec Burks

The Golden State Warriors might be better than nine wins halfway through the season if D’Angelo Russell wasn’t part of the injury report instead of being on the court with a G League lineup. Not bad, considering that Russell is in a similar position he was in with the Brooklyn Nets a year ago. Alec Burks has come along nicely after spending the first part of his career with the Utah Jazz.

D’Angelo Russell23.2 PPG3.4 RPG6.0 APG43.3%
Alec Burks15.8 PPG4.5 RPG3.0 APG42.3%
TOTAL39.0 PPG7.9 RPG9.0 APG42.8%

#15 … San Antonio Spurs – DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge

The boys in black and silver have had a mixed bag this season, living under the roof of a .500 mark for most of the season. Rumors have LaMarcus Aldridge being eyed by the Miami Heat. This could be a crazy week, given expectations are always huge in San Antonio, but not many people are fearing the Spurs the way they used to and Aldridge hasn’t taken ownership the he did (then deferred) in Portland.

DeMar DeRozan21.7 PPG5.1 RPG4.9 APG53.0%
LaMarcus Aldridge19.3 PPG7.8 RPG2.4 APG50.9%
TOTAL41.0 PPG12.9 RPG7.3 APG52.0%

#14 … Boston Celtics – Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown

It’s hard to believe statistically these two are not in the Top Ten. Talent wise and watchability should have them there. Jayson Tatum’s worth, specifically, is being shown right now with him being out. He is untradeable, while others may not be untouchable.

Jayson Tatum21.7 PPG6.9 RPG2.8 APG42.5%
Jaylen Brown20.7 PPG7.2 RPG2.3 APG51.1%
TOTAL42.4 PPG14.1 RPG5.1 APG42.8%

#13 … Washington Wizards – Bradley Beal and Davis Bertans

They didn’t show it much versus the Atlanta Hawks over the weekend, but then again, Trae Young was on a mission in that high scoring game. Davis Bertans has been a nice addition while the Wizards wait on John Wall to return (Wall looked good working out in Atlanta pre-game the other night). But the load is still shouldered by Bradley Beal most of the time, which has to be wearing thin.

Bradley Beal27.8 PPG4.8 RPG6.6 APG43.5%
Davis Bertans15.4 PPG4.9 RPG1.7 APG44.9%
TOTAL43.2 PPG9.7 RPG8.3 APG44.2%

#12 … Utah Jazz – Donovan Mitchell and Bojan Bogdanovic

The addition of Jordan Clarkson to the Utah Jazz’s rotation doesn’t seem to have hampered the production of Donovan Mitchell and Bojan Bogdanovic. They’ve had the Jazz up in the second seed spot in the Western Conference twice in the last few days. Be nice if they can hang there the second half of the season consistently.

Donovan Mitchell25.0 PPG4.5 RPG4.4 APG46.2%
Bojan Bogdanovic20.9 PPG4.4 RPG2.0 APG43.9%
TOTAL45.9 PPG8.9 RPG6.4 APG45.1%

#11 … New Orleans Pelicans – Jrue Holiday and Brandon Ingram

With Zion Williamson finally in the fold, this may change up to Brandon Ingram and Williamson. But for the first half of the season, it’s been refreshing to see Ingram’s progress and Jrue Holiday stick with it, despite his bestie playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. Also nice to see Lonzo Ball’s resurrection in New Orleans.

Brandon Ingram25.2 PPG6.8 RPG3.8 APG48.0%
TOTAL44.8 PPG11.7 RPG10.3 APG45.9%

#10 … Phoenix Suns – Devin Booker and Kelly Oubre, Jr.

This duo has had an up and down year, dealing with the 25 game suspension of Deandre Ayton and having to win games based on how much Devin Booker scores. Kelly Oubre, Jr. is around to do the dirty work and he does it very well. I have enjoyed watching his emergence since being traded to the Suns.

Kelly Oubre, Jr.18.2 PPG6.1 RPG1.7 APG46.0%
TOTAL44.4 PPG9.9 RPG8.2 APG48.5%

#9 … Toronto Raptors – Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam

The champs have powered through adversity, with each of these guys having spent time on the injured list. Both have come back with a vengeance and their absence(s) have given opportunities for guys like Norman Powell, Fred VanVleet, and Chris Boucher to shine in their stead.

Kyle Lowry21.0 PPG4.7 RPG7.5 APG40.8%
Pascal Siakam25.1 PPG8.0 RPG3.6 APG45.7%
TOTAL46.1 PPG12.7 RPG11.1 APG43.3%

#8 … Atlanta Hawks – Trae Young and John Collins

Another duo whose level of expectation should have been through the roof of State Farm Arena, but fell flat when Trae Young went down with an ankle injury and then John Collins was suspended for 25 games for PEDs. Back together, they dropped a nice 152 point game on the Washington Wizards on Sunday, and the development of guys like De’Andre Hunter, Cam Reddish, and Brandon Goodwin has been nice. Add James Wiseman or Anthony Edwards in the NBA Draft and Atlanta will be as fun next season as they were Sunday night.

John Collins18.0 PPG9.3 RPG1.7 APG51.3%
TOTAL46.9 PPG13.6 RPG10.3 APG48.1%

#7 … Dallas Mavericks – Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis

This duo was rolling along rather nicely, until Luka Doncic got hurt, and then Kristaps Porzingis’ knee began acting up again. Support has been a mishmash of the player du jour, and Dwight Powell was often that player, but his season ended with an Achilles injury last week. Not sure Willie Cauley-Stein is the answer – personally, I’d have gone after Steven Adams. But good luck, Dallas.

#6 … Los Angeles Clippers – Kawhi Leonard and Paul George

This pairing has been so on again, off again that it’s fitting they’re in Hollywood. It’s like one of those bromance things you read about in the L.A. rags. Paul George missed games in the early part of the season while rehabbing offseason surgery. Now he’s rehabbing for nie games and counting on a hamstring issue. Meanwhile, I’ve lost count on how many games Kawhi Leonard has sat out for load management and how many games it’s cost them. When they’re together, they’re spectacular.

#5 … Portland Trailblazers – Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum

These two have not gelled like they did last season and seasons prior. The Trailblazers have struggled so badly that they had to add Carmelo Anthony and Trevor Ariza to the mix … and may not be done yet. Go get Kevin Love and load the Blazers for success. They got so close last year.

#4 … Milwaukee Bucks – Giannis Antetokuonmpo and Khris Middleton

Arguably the best one-two punch in the NBA on any given night. Giannis Antetokuonmpo is still playing MVP level basketball, and Khris Middleton leads without missing a beat when Antetokuonmpo is struggling or the rare occasions he’s out of the lineup.

#3 … Minnesota Timberwolves – Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns

Karl-Anthony Towns was out for almost half of the first half of the season, and is reportedly disgruntled with the situation in Minneapolis. I mean, who wouldn’t be? But this season has seen the long awaited emergence of Andrew Wiggins, who’s played a leading role and best supporting actor and done well with accepting either role. Expect a trade from this organization, though, in the next week or so.

#2 … Los Angeles Lakers – LeBron James and Anthony Davis

We knew this would be a fun ride, and it has been. So far. Still another half season to go. The stretch run will tell if being the one-two go to in L.A. all 82 games wears on an old man or not. The only thing stopping LeBron James and Anthony Davis is potential injury. Otherwise, I see them running through most everybody.

#1 … Houston Rockets – James Harden and Russell Westbrook

Since tabulating this, we’ve seen Russell Westbrook take over the Houston Rockets in his play, while teammate James Harden struggles and battles Hardenisia (also known as shooting 100 three pointers and missing 80 of them). Eric Gordon, who has been both injured and a disappointment all season long, stepped it up with 50 points on Monday night against the Utah Jazz. Ben McLemore has also benefited from the Harden-Westbrook pairing. Let’s see if they can keep it up and stretch LeBron James and Anthony Davis in the playoffs. Mike D’Antoni’s coaching future depends on it.
