New York Liberty point guard Sabrina Ionescu suffered a Grade 3 sprain in her left ankle. Ionescu suffered the ankle injury Friday in the loss to the Atlanta Dream. Ionescu lost her footing with the Dream’s Betnijah Laney. Due to the Grade 3 sprain recovery time frame, Ionescu was expected to be out for the rest of the season. However, after an X-ray examination, there wasn’t a fracture. The injury will be treated nonsurgically.

Not surprisingly, Ionescu wowed everyone in her first appearances as an official WNBA player. In her second game against the Dallas Wings she scored 33 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds. As an Oregon Duck, she averaged 16.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 9.1 assists. Ionescu was also the first collegiate player with over 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 1000 assists.

Ionescu may have started her WNBA career with an injury but this injury will not be indicative of her career. The number one draft pick has proven her ability to be the top player. If she returns late September, Ionescu will have six more games to prove she is the Rookie of the Year.
