The Return of a Champion

With very little time left until the kickoff of some of the biggest tennis events, some players are ready to get back on the court while others are sticking to the hiatus route. Serena Williams, one of the best at the sport, has definitely labeled herself as a strong supporter for reviving her career.

The 38 year old inspiration – holding the most major titles in all of tennis – has not played in any tournaments since February, which has clearly been way too long for her. In mid-June, she was elated after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo gave the green light: “I really cannot wait to return to New York and play the US Open 2020.”

However, she did not speak in regard to events preceding the US Open until this past week. She has decided to use the Western, Southern, and Top Seed Opens as a warm-up, as well as the international Palermo Ladies Open, which is set to take place in Italy on Monday.

With the major decrease in tournaments able to happen internationally as well as in America, Grand Slams cannot be the primary focus of such high-profile champions. Talent has been spreading to international events with smaller reputations, which is certainly a big positive for organizers.

Thankfully for Williams, accommodations will be made for her to compete while also being a mother. Although other players are only allowed one companion as their entourage, exceptions are made for mothers. With that in mind, speculation still remains over who her true plus-one will be.

Aside from the excitement of having such a big name back on the court, Williams has been making news through her commitment to supporting protection during the pandemic. She has recently donated over four million masks to schools by teaming up with the National School Board Association, Scholastic, and Bella+Canvas. Through this partnership, she is also donating educational materials to millions of children across the country.

It brings a lot of joy back to the sports world to have the return of such an inspirational figure who does it all on and off the court. Serena Williams has certainly been missed during this time and will be a big point of focus in the coming weeks. There is no doubt she will be coming back with a bang.
