UFC 251 From Kamaru Usman’s Perspective

On July 3rd the news broke that Gilbert Burns tested positive for COVID, forcing him out of UFC 251’s main event versus welterweight champ Kamaru Usman. Two days later, Jorge Masvidal agreed to terms to face the 170lb king next Saturday.

In just a couple of days, Usman went from facing a teammate in Burns to taking on a bitter rival in Masvidal. This sudden and drastic change will undoubtedly affect the champ’s mindset heading into his second title defense.

Usman’s last fight certified his ability to persevere against a bitter rival when he defeated Colby Covington, but this time it’s different.

For months, Usman had been preparing to make his second title defense against friend and teammate Gilbert Burns. Now, when he steps into the octagon as the UFC 251 headliner he’ll be standing opposite a man he despises.

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ told TMZ this in regards to his mindset heading into the bout against Masvidal:

“I see no face by the time I’m in there anyways so now it’s just a little extra… a little extra push to go in there and really make some damage.”

Wise words from the champ, who seems to be keeping things strictly business as usual. Many people are giving Masvidal ‘props’ for taking this fight on short notice (and rightfully so), but Usman deserves credit as well being a true competitor and understanding of the circumstances.

Dana White continues to assert the proven fact that everything is incredibly unpredictable right now as it pertains to operating and maintaining the events. Gilbert Burns is not the first fighter to test positive for COVID and he will not be the last.

The UFC proves time and time again that they are able to persevere when their backs are against the wall, and having half of your main event fall thru a week before fight night definitely falls into that category.

Usman vs Masvidal is bound to be a super competitive and heated fight between two of the division’s finest.

Expect ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ to keep it all business to ensure he gets his belt wrapped back around his waist.
