Long before the New York Giants take the field this fall, the foundation for the season is already being built.
It isn’t happening solely in meeting rooms, weight rooms, or practice fields. Sometimes, it’s happening at a softball diamond surrounded by fans, former players, families, and teammates sharing a few laughs while competing for bragging rights.
That was the scene at Brian Burns’ charity softball event, where current Giants players, franchise legends, and hundreds of fans came together for an afternoon that highlighted the organization’s commitment to community and the growing chemistry within the locker room.
For Burns, the event was about bringing people together.
“It was amazing, man,” Burns said. “I think we’re bringing together the Giants. It’s a family.”
That family atmosphere was evident throughout the day.
Current players competed against former Giants stars, fans filled the stands hours before the event began, and teammates spent the afternoon building relationships away from the pressures of football.
For running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., the event represented much more than a softball game.
“It feels good,” Tracy said. “We’ve got a great crowd. People showed up, and the weather did its thing today. It’s a beautiful day. We’ve got current players versus some of the former players. We’ve got some legends out here, some of our best players out here. It’s a great day, a great vibe, and great energy.”
The matchup between current and former Giants quickly became one of the day’s most entertaining storylines.
While Burns jokingly referred to the alumni players as the “old heads,” Tracy was more than willing to embrace the friendly rivalry.
“It’s definitely the new school versus the old heads,” Tracy said with a smile. “I think the new school is going to get them today.”
Beneath the playful competition, however, was a deeper appreciation for what the event represented.
One of the unique aspects of the Giants organization is its connection to its history. Events like Burns’ softball game create opportunities for current players to interact with the men who helped build the franchise’s legacy.
“I think it’s really important,” Tracy said. “You’ve got current players, you’ve got guys who just got here a month ago, but you’ve also got people who know the bloodline behind the New York Giants. It’s cool to come in here, talk with them, pick their brains, and learn from some of the things they’ve experienced.”
For players entering new roles and younger teammates still finding their place within the organization, those interactions can be invaluable.
“It’s cool to see them be competitive and see them in a different light and a different environment,” Tracy added. “This whole event is awesome for us as current players because we get to bond as a team.”
That sense of bonding was a recurring theme throughout the day.
While football remains the common thread connecting everyone involved, the relationships formed away from the field often become just as important as the work accomplished on it.
“The camaraderie we build through all these games is important,” Tracy said. “We’re just out here having a good time with great vibes and great energy.”
Few players understand the value of community engagement more than linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux.
As the founder of the JREAM Foundation—Journey to Readiness and Enrichment through Academic Mentorship—Thibodeaux has made giving back a major part of his mission off the field.
When discussing Burns’ event, he immediately pointed to its impact beyond the scoreboard.
“This is crazy. It was amazing,” Thibodeaux said. “Honestly, I just love what it does for the team, what it does for the community. The Giants fans are amazing.”
Thibodeaux’s own charitable work focuses on educational programs and tutoring initiatives in New York and Los Angeles, helping young people gain access to opportunities that can shape their futures.
For him, Burns’ event reflected many of the same values that drive his own foundation.
Whether through charity softball games, educational programs, or community outreach, the goal remains the same: strengthening connections and creating opportunities for others.
The fans certainly embraced that opportunity.
Many arrived hours before the gates opened, eager to spend time around their favorite players. They participated in activities, enjoyed family-friendly entertainment, and got a chance to see Giants players outside of their helmets and uniforms.
“It’s huge because a lot of people don’t really know you outside of your helmet,” Tracy said. “They see the number, they see the plays you make, and they love you, but they don’t know what you’re like away from football.”
That connection with fans remains important to many Giants players.
“We wouldn’t be the New York Giants without our fan base,” Tracy said. “We wouldn’t have this opportunity without them.”
The appreciation flowed both ways throughout the afternoon.
Players signed autographs, posed for photos, and interacted with supporters who often only get to see them from the stands at MetLife Stadium. For many children in attendance, it was a chance to create lifelong memories.
At the same time, players enjoyed an opportunity to simply be themselves.
There were competitive moments. There was plenty of trash talk. There were laughs, home run attempts, and friendly rivalries. But above all else, there was a sense of unity.
That unity could prove valuable as the Giants continue preparing for the upcoming season.
Asked about the atmosphere surrounding the team entering another important year, Thibodeaux kept his answer simple.
“We just have to keep working,” he said. “We’re slowly stacking. We’re building, and we’re excited.”
Those words could easily describe the softball event itself.
The Giants are building.
Not just a football team, but a culture.
A culture that values community involvement, respects franchise history, embraces its fans, and encourages players to lead both on and off the field.
Brian Burns’ softball game served as a reminder of exactly that.
For one afternoon, the wins and losses didn’t matter.
What mattered was bringing together current players, former legends, families, and fans under one banner.
The New York Giants family.
And judging by the smiles throughout the ballpark, Burns accomplished exactly what he set out to do.
