Overview

An All-American this past year who’s garnered All-PAC 12 recognition the past couple of seasons, Troy Fautanu was an underrated piece to Washington’s spectacular offensive attack this year. While he may have performed well for the Huskies, there could be some potential growing pains as he makes the jump to the NFL.

The University of Washington’s starting left tackle, Fautanu boasts an extremely athletic profile that performed well at LT. From the snap, Fautanu pops out of his stance with a sense of urgency. While he may be quick out of his stance, he still approaches second-level defenders under control. In pass protection and down the field, Fautanu plays with active eyes to scan for oncoming rushers and when assignments need to be swapped. Once he gets his hands on defenders, Fautanu’s strength is noticeable. He has a strong grip that’s difficult to separate from once he gets a hold.

Still, Fautanu doesn’t come without his areas for improvement. Throughout his time playing, Fautanu’s shown difficulty handling rushers with active hands. Additionally, his flexibility is subpar which limits his ability to smoothly move laterally. This is evident in his troubles getting around on reach blocks and staying in front of rushers with a good first step.

Currently, Fautanu is projected as a borderline first-round pick. While some mocks have him going in the first round, an equal amount mocks him going early in the second. He’s a good player who was good for the Huskies and can also be good in the NFL.

My Two Cents

Fautanu is a good football player. However, personally, there are other guards I’d rather wait to take later on. He’s someone who has a good base to build from, but my gut is telling me to go elsewhere. It’s nothing against him, but sometimes you have to trust your gut feeling.
