UFC Claims To Be Returning Next Month

Yesterday UFC President Dana White announced that the UFC will be returning May 9th with a “supercard” headlined by Tony Ferguson vs. Juston Gaethje. As of now the location of the proposed event is unknown.

When Dana White broke the news last week that UFC 249 was forced to be postponed, he declared that the UFC would be the first sport back. A return on May 9th would likely accomplish that goal.

While the location of the event is still unknown, it’s assumed that it will take place in either Florida or on the newly acquired “fight island”.

What we do know is how stacked the proposed card is:

  • Tony Ferguson vs. Justin Gaethje (Interim lightweight title)
  • Henry Cejudo [c] vs. Dominick Cruz (Bantamweight title)
  • Amanda Nunes [c] vs. Felicia Spencer (Women’s featherweight title)
  • Francis Ngannou vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik (Heavyweight)
  • Calvin Kattar vs. Jeremy Stephens (Featherweight)
  • Donald Cerrone vs. Anthony Pettis (Welterweight)
  • Aleksei Oleinik vs. Fabricio Werdum (Heavyweight)
  • Carla Esparz vs. Michelle Waterson (Strawweight)
  • Uriah Hall vs. Jacare Souza (Middleweight)
  • Vincente Luque vs. Niko Price (Welterweight)

The UFC’s return on May 9th would be a breath of fresh air for a world in need of entertainment. It would also be the first domino to fall in the “super card” trend (see my past article here http://www.backsportspage.com/ufc-249-and-the-possibility-of-super-cards/).

Dana White has worked diligently to get fights to the fans, but it’s a risky game that he’s playing. If UFC 249 falls through again, it will be a huge blemish on the world’s biggest MMA organization.
