Welcome back to the top 25! With the first whole week in the books for college football, my rankings have seen some shake-up. Seeing almost every team in action helps decipher who’s better early on. That said, there’s still a long way to go, and any of these teams could fall out as quickly as this week. Which teams fell out of the top 25 this week?

First Team Out: Texas A&M
Teams Dropping Out: Florida and Texas A&M

Last weekend, while other Top 25 teams played Division II schools, there were a few high-quality matchups. Notre Dame and Texas A&M played an excellent game for Week 1.

Notre Dame’s haunting defense had A&M on the ropes late and secured the victory. Marcus Freeman has fans hopeful for Notre Dame football once again. Meanwhile, A&M hung on strong but needed more out of their offense. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt considering the defense they played, but their offense needs to perform better if they want back in my Top 25.

Florida Cup Whooping

Miami and Florida battled in a game that was close early, but the Hurricanes made themselves known by the second half. The Hurricanes looked remarkable; their jump inside the top 10 this week shouldn’t be questioned. Cam Ward has them as a legitimate contender. As for Florida, there’s not much to say with that performance. I don’t see them back in the Top 25 anytime soon.

Smaller Changes

Many other teams played cupcakes and had success to various degrees. Most of the small changes in this week’s rankings stem from those performances. Some teams looked far more prepared than others. Ole Miss is a perfect example after their 76-0 win against Furman. Then you have a team like Oregon who had their fans sighing of relief after a close victory against the FCS Idaho Vandals. While some teams played Divison II schools, their play was very telling for their new ranking.

New Teams Entering the Top 25

This week, both Utah and Kansas State will enter my Top 25. Utah’s 49-0 Thursday night stomping of Southern Utah excites me to see what they do in the Big XII this year. Kansas State outgained their opponent despite losing the time of possession battle by more than 6 minutes. The Wildcats had six different players carry the ball at least once. The lowest average yards per carry among them was 6.9, with the next closest being 8.6 yards per carry. This team has me excited to watch their rushing attack this season.

More Big Matchups Heading Into Week 2

It’s early in the college football season, but we are already getting some incredible matchups. Michigan meets Texas this weekend in a battle that will significantly affect next week’s rankings. Iowa plays Iowa State in a game that will be very telling for both programs. Also, NC State and Tennessee will battle in a colossal early-season clash. All three games could have significant effects on next week’s Top 25.

Outside the Top 25, I’ll be watching the Colorado-Nebraska game. That finish from last year has been asking for a rematch since the final whistle blew. I’ll also be attending the ASU-Mississippi State game as ASU attempts to capture its first program win against an SEC school. This weekend has more than enough college football for everyone to enjoy.
